Great female artists they never told us about: 1. Berthe Morisot

Probably because museums and galleries used to be run by men, and most books on art were written by men, many wonderful female artists have been overlooked for so long.  One of these is Berthe Morisot. She exhibited her paintings alongside work by Manet and Monet and other impressionists in the 1870’s, and her work should be recognised as some of the best of that era. I have only seen two of her paintings at the National Gallery and they may not be her best.  Most people don’t seem to have heard of her, which is a great shame.

Melvin Bragg and friends have just talked about Morisot on BBC R4 and there’s a podcast if you are interested – see ‘In Our Time’.  Very interesting.  To see some of her work look on

That’s quite a good selection of images with a bit of background on the artist.    I hope you enjoy these works.    Roger
