garden gate

We  moved to The Crowns in 2011 as we needed a larger Studio. This lovely old building needed a lot of TLC and for the past 8 years we have been restoring and renovating it; we run regular drawing and painting lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and occasional short courses other days.

We love being surrounded by such beautiful countryside with sheep in the pasture and with views to The Malverns and the Black Mountains.

We really enjoy the garden designed by Chelsea and international gold medal winner Paul Hervey-Brookes.   Wonderful inspiration for drawing and painting.

Roger studied Art at Leeds and Canterbury, achieving Distinctions, and later studied lettering at Chesterfield gaining further Distinctions.  For several years he taught Art and 3D Design at a high school in Kent.

Enthralled by a David Attenborough film on primitive cultures, he then spent the following two years teaching among the Enga mountain tribes of Papua New Guinea.  Returned to England and then, dreaming of turquoise waters, sailed across the Atlantic to the Caribbean in his home built yacht.

In 1986 he painted their first map - the British Virgin Islands -  then shipped the first prints of this work to the BVI inside a home built flat-packed plywood dinghy.  Anchored in a beautiful bay, they rowed to work every day - a studio on the edge of the beach.

For the last few years Ruth and Roger have enjoyed teaching drawing and painting in the Studio.
